Catalogue Note
An 18th-century silver mote spoon, the small pierced bowl with scrollwork and small cross motifs, and a slender handle with graceful proportions typical of Georgian tea wares. Mote spoons were designed to skim loose tea leaves and motes from the cup. The surface shows pleasing patina and honest wear commensurate with age and use; the pierced bowl remains intact and structurally sound.
Spoon Lore
Mote spoons were fashionable accessories of 18th-century English tea drinking: the tiny spoon with a pierced bowl let drinkers skim floating tea leaves from their cups, while the long slender handle also served to clear blocked teapot spouts.
