Catalogue Note
A handsome serving spoon with a polished steel bowl and an elongated cylindrical handle embellished with vibrant hand-painted enamel decoration in the traditional Russian manner. The handle displays an exuberant foliate and floral pattern in rose, cobalt blue, forest green, and ochre against a cream ground, executed with fine detail and careful colour registration. The bowl remains bright and unblemished; the enamel work shows minor wear consistent with age and gentle use. This is a charming example of early twentieth-century Russian souvenir or domestic ware.
Spoon Lore
Russian enamelled spoons and flatware became popular international souvenirs during the late Imperial period, particularly after the 1890 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Western collectors prized them for their colourful folk-art aesthetic, and the tradition of hand-painted enamel decoration on metal vessels has deep roots in traditional Russian craft.
