Catalogue Note
A porcelain spoon rendered in the classical Chinese export taste, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a dense floral motif of peonies, chrysanthemums, and scrolling foliage. The interior of the bowl bears the same ornamental scheme, framed by a lappeted border to the rim. The handle is gently tapered and decorated en suite. The piece exhibits the characteristic weight and gloss of fine hard-paste porcelain, though surface inspection would confirm whether this is period Qing production or a later reproduction in the same idiom.
Spoon Lore
Chinese export porcelain spoons were luxury commodities in 18th-century Europe, particularly among the wealthy, who prized them as exotic curiosities and status symbols; blue and white designs copied classical Ming patterns to appeal to European collectors' taste for the 'antique' East.
