Catalogue Note
A handsome pewter serving spoon of generous proportions, featuring a gently rounded, near-circular bowl and a slender, slightly tapered handle that rises with pleasing grace. The metal displays the characteristic warm grey patina and surface wear consistent with age and use, with minor oxidation and verdigris scattered across the bowl and stem. The form is understated and functional, unmarked, reflecting the practical domestic metalwork of the late 18th or early 19th century.
Spoon Lore
Pewter spoons remained popular for table use well into the 19th century despite the rise of Sheffield plate and Britannia metal; pewter's malleability made it ideal for hand-raising the bowl, and its soft lustre was valued in middle-class households as a respectable alternative to expensive silver.
