Catalogue Note

A charming brass condiment spoon of modest proportions, distinguished by its ornamental handle cast with a scrolled, latticed motif suggestive of Art Nouveau or Eastern design influence. The shallow, well-formed bowl retains a warm golden patina consistent with age and gentle use. The handle tapers to a slender stem and terminal ball, lending the piece an elegant, if diminutive, presence. Surface wear and oxidation are consistent with a long domestic life.

Spoon Lore

Brass condiment spoons, often derived from Oriental prototypes, enjoyed considerable popularity in the Victorian and Edwardian periods as affordable alternatives to silver, and were frequently gifted or collected as curiosities; their small size made them ideal for salt cellars and shared condiment dishes at the tea table.
