Catalogue Note

A substantial Italian silver-gilt serving spoon of refined nineteenth-century manufacture, the handle wrought with rococo scrollwork and the whole piece finished in warm gilding.

Spoon Lore

Parcel-gilt serving spoons—with gilded bowls and silver handles—were favoured by Victorian hostesses not only for elegance but for practical durability: the gold wash on the bowl resists tarnishing better than bare silver and was believed to impart a subtle warmth to soups and sauces at the table.
