Catalogue Note
A generously proportioned wooden ladle in the Shaker tradition, turned from a single piece of pale, even-grained hardwood. The bowl is hemispherical and capacious, flowing naturally into a slender handle of rectangular section. The work shows clean, assured craftsmanship and finishing, with a subtle satin patina suggesting gentle use. The form is utilitarian and refined in equal measure, in keeping with Shaker principles of honest simplicity.
Spoon Lore
The Shakers, known for their austere and functional craftsmanship, produced plain, well-made wooden utensils in their communal workshops. Shaker woodenware was valued for its simplicity and durability, and surviving 19th-century pieces are now prized collector objects embodying the principle of utility as beauty.
