Catalogue Note
A substantial serving spoon executed in gilt bronze, its handle chased with Egyptian hieroglyphic motifs and flanked by narrow geometric borders. The broad, shallow bowl shows characteristic verdigris and patina consistent with age and use. A papyrus-form terminal ornaments the handle's base. The piece exemplifies the Victorian Egyptomania that gripped European decorative arts following archaeological discoveries and the opening of the Suez Canal.
Spoon Lore
Egyptian Revival spoons gained popularity during the 1870s–1890s, riding a wave of public fascination ignited by tomb excavations and European museum acquisitions; such pieces blended archaeological fantasy with manufacturing capability, as most hieroglyphic detail was chased or stamped rather than authentically transliterated.
