Catalogue Note
A handsome serving spoon cast in sterling silver with a naturalistic shell-form bowl rendered in deep, radiating flutes that create an elegant scalloped rim. The handle rises with restrained grace, terminating in a rounded, gently tapering finial. The bright polish and crisp definition of the shell motif suggest competent manufacture and careful maintenance; minor wear to high points is consistent with light domestic use. A charming example of the naturalistic taste favoured in late Victorian and Edwardian service.
Spoon Lore
Shell-form serving spoons, known as 'shell bowls' or 'coquille' patterns, became fashionable in the 1870s as part of the broader Victorian revival of naturalistic ornament inspired by archaeological discoveries and the growing scientific study of marine life. They remained popular into the early 20th century and are still manufactured today in various materials.
