Catalogue Note
A substantial serving spoon of the Victorian era, rendered in sterling silver with an ornate handle enriched by foliate and floral chasing in high relief. The handle terminates in an acanthus-and-scroll terminal, characteristic of mid-to-late 19th-century flatware design. The bowl is generous and well-formed, with a smooth, slightly worn interior consistent with use. The piece shows appropriate patination and minor wear to the high points of the ornament, lending authenticity to its age.
Spoon Lore
Victorian serving spoons often featured heavily ornamented handles as a sign of domestic gentility; the floral motifs were inspired by Rococo Revival taste, which dominated English and American silverware manufacture from the 1860s through 1890s, even as Neo-Classical designs competed for market favour.
