Catalogue Note
A handsome serving spoon of sterling silver with a deeply bowled form. The tapering handle is ornamented with vibrant polychrome enamel work depicting a Nordic mountain landscape—snow-capped peaks beneath a sunset sky, evergreen forests rendered in rich greens, and decorative scrollwork terminals in silvered metal. The enamel shows expected minor crazing and wear consistent with age and use; the bowl retains a pleasing matte patina. A charming example of Scandinavian souvenir flatware from the Belle Époque period.
Spoon Lore
Norwegian and Swedish enamelled spoons became fashionable gifts and souvenirs during the late 1800s and early 1900s, marketed to wealthy travelers and collectors across Europe and America. The landscape enamel technique, combining painting and firing, was labour-intensive and commanded premium prices—these pieces were objects of genuine pride in modest households.
