Catalogue Note
A handsome serving spoon of substantial gauge, distinguished by a pronounced gadroon (fluted) border running the full perimeter of the bowl. The handle rises with restrained elegance, terminating in a gently rounded finial and decorated at the shoulders with a delicate banded motif. The piece shows the refined proportions and thoughtful ornamentation typical of early 20th-century American or Continental flatware, with no visible monogram or maker's mark apparent from this view. The silvering appears even and well-preserved.
Spoon Lore
Gadroon borders—those radiating flutes around the rim of the bowl—were a hallmark of neoclassical design revived throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The pattern served both aesthetic and practical purposes, as the ridges added structural rigidity to the thin metal and provided an appealing play of light.
