Catalogue Note
A handsome serving spoon of substantial proportions, the bowl and handle lavishly engraved throughout with scrolling foliate ornament and flowering sprays in the classical Victorian taste. The terminal finial is modelled as an elegant acanthus leaf, and the handle tapers gracefully from the broad, decorated shoulder. The gilt surface exhibits expected patina and light wear consistent with age and use, the engraving remaining crisp and well-defined. A fine example of late 19th-century domestic luxury flatware.
Spoon Lore
During the Victorian era, ornamental serving spoons were often given as wedding gifts or inherited as part of a family's table treasure; such pieces were frequently displayed in sideboard cabinets rather than placed in daily service, preserving their decorative character for generations.
